Rising Damp
‘Rising damp‘ is perhaps the most commonly-known term associated with damp proofing. Rising damp is the process of water soaking upwards through a building’s fabrics via a natural mechanism referred to as ‘capillary action’. Water from the ground or other sources absorbs into materials, such as brickwork, and transfers to adjacent areas via the same process.
When rising damp occurs, it can damage the internal surfaces of walls or any floors (timber or otherwise) which it comes into contact with and so it is essential that the problem is addressed as soon as possible. Our highly experienced CSRT Surveyors are experts in identifying the cause of rising damp in your home and recommending the appropriate treatment to eradicate it. Additionally, our trained PCAQ Technicians are specialists at carrying out all damp proofing associated works, ensuring that your home becomes dry and stays dry, wherever you are in the Castleford area.
Penetrating Damp
Penetrating damp occurs when water penetrates the external fabric of a building by a source other than the ground beneath. Penetrating damp occurs most commonly in walls which are earth retaining, such as those in a cellar or basement.
The natural water held in the earth transfers onto the external brickwork that it touches, then through capillary action, the water soaks through the brickwork and onto the internal face of the wall. Like rising damp, this causes damage to the internal wall surface and should be rectified if the occupant intends to inhabit the room. Other causes of penetrating damp can be broken or leaky guttering, cracked render or brickwork and defective window sills. We are Castleford’s leading damp proofing specialists and our CSRT surveyors visit homes with penetrating damp on a daily basis; if your home suffers from the effects of penetrating damp, contact us today to secure your free survey appointment.
