Rising Damp
‘Rising damp‘ is perhaps the most common form of damp problems and is likely to be the one you have heard the most about. Rising damp describes the process when damage, cracks and holes draw water upwards through a building’s brickwork. This is called capillary action. Materials such as brickword, absorb moisture from the ground, or sometimes other sources, and then transfer it to adjacent areas. It means that when rising damp occurs, it can damage large areas including the internal surfaces of walls and floors (whether they’re timber or another material) It is vital that any damp problem is addressed as soon as you notice it to prevent further damage and expensive repairs.
We have a team of experienced CSRT surveyors that would love to carry out a damp proofing survey on your property. They are experts at identifying causes of rising damp and therefore can recommend the best treatment to get rid of it for good. Additionally, we have trained PCAQ Technicians who are experts at carrying out damp proofing and other associated works such as timber preservation. They help to ensure that your home stays dry and comfortable, wherever you are in York or Yorkshire.
Penetrating Damp
Penetrating damp is caused when moisture enters the wall of a building from a source other than the ground beneath the wall. It occurs most commonly in walls such as basement or cellars, known as earth retaining walls. The earth surrounding these walls is naturally very moist. The water easily transfers onto the external brickwork which it is in contact with, and then, through capillary action, soaks through the brick material. It eventually reaches the internal face of the wall. Like with rising damp, penetrating damp causes lasting and harmful damage and needs to be sorted if anyone intends to spend time in the room.
