During the First World War, this Great Hall was requisitioned to create the 1st Southern General Hospital, a facility for the Royal Army Medical Corps, to treat military casualties. It was equipped with 520 beds and treated 125,000 injured servicemen, including the young writer Tolkien.

In December, we were privileged to be able to attend a graduation in the Great Hall - the first since 2019. The decor is gorgeously grand, with a large foyer leading into the impressive Hall. Rows of chairs were set out, with guests safely distanced. Clearly these can be arranged accordingly, depending on the event. We were honoured to have the orchestra, who were marvellous. The acoustics sounded superb, due to the vaulted ceiling. The Hall is available to hire. Bathroom facilities are available and there's an accessible entrance. Parking is closeby. A fabulous venue.

My opinion may be biased as an alumni, but it's a lovely historic building. Would be great as a wedding venue 😆
