Car hire in Edinburgh and East Lothian

Edinburgh Airport's affordable car rental services allow visitors to the Scottish capital the freedom of roaming from Edinburgh in the south to Inverness, home of Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster, in the north, plus the highlands, and Glasgow in the west; allowing you to get a glimpse of all aspects of Scotland.

Edinburgh Airport is situated a short distance from Edinburgh City, and having a hire car makes the adventure begin as soon as you step off the airplane! Close to the city itself are a series of spectacular golf courses.

A short drive will take you to the Muirfield golf course, which has hosted the pretigious Open Championship 16 times so far. Many of the courses are within sight of the dormant volcano Arthur’s Seat, which dominated Edinburgh’s background, while others have Edinburgh Castle to look upon, an inspirational sight that may or may not distract the golfer!

Carry your clubs in the spacious boot of your cheap rental car from Budget and save the bother of carting it from hotel to course. If you have brought the kids along, a day trip out of town and into the Lothians will delight the entire family, with the National Museum of Flight – home to the grounded Concorde – along with a series of other attractions providing entertainment and intrigue.

Linlithgow Palace is set within parkland filled with birds and its very own loch, while the palace itself is stunning in its architecture. Children of all ages will delight in the Go Ape adventure park, where zip lines and climbing nets beckon. Rental cars allow you to explore these places, along with all the other delights the area has to offer.

Edinburgh and its surrounding areas are scattered with medieval and historical castles that will enthuse any history buff. From Edinburgh Castle to Craigmillar, each is rich with a past riddled with fascinating stories.

Take time out to drive from one to the other and experience life as it was hundreds of years ago, or explore the beautifully-styled gardens and parks where each is set. Car rental is a cheap and easy way of getting from one to the other.

East Lothian is an area outside of Edinburgh city that is home to quaint villages, beautiful beaches and a whole host of activities. This is an area that is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, with cycle trails and hiking routes crisscrossing it.

Rent a bike and transport it easily with cheap car hire from Budget, where specialised needs can be catered for in advance. The Scottish Seabird Centre offers a sight to be remembered with over 150,000 gannets relaxing on Bass Rock, a fantastic attraction in itself. From here, you can take a boat ride across the bay to the Rock, which Sir David Attenborough described as a “Wildlife Wonder of the world.”

The seaside also allows visitors to try water sports such as kite surfing, and what could be better than to have a hire car that is cheap and cosy after splashing through the chilly waters of the North Sea all day? From exploring the ancient ruins to following the path of The Da Vinci Code, Scotland offers an enormous amount of sights to see and places to visit, and getting car hire cheap from Budget is a great way of exploring this mysterious land.

I was charged 23 pounds for fuel when I left the car with more fuel than when I rented it. If you rent from them, look the car over carefully, document everything. Since I don't have international calling, I contacted them by facebook to resolve the discrepancy. I was acknowledged by a worker who told me they would take care of my needs, but I've yet to hear back from them... I don't think they are dishonest, just poorly managed. Update: Refund received for the fuel charge. Customer service was courteous.

I was charged 88 pounds of fuel costs upon returning the car, even though I returned the car with a full tank. I have written to customer service and I hope to have support. I see with regret in the comments below that I am not the only one. after few mails with the post sales service I had eventually pay the full charge of an empty fuel tank, just because I do not have a picture of the level. Very very nice!!

Possibly the worst car rental experience I ever had. The car we rented at Edinburgh Airport from Budget, a Peugeot, had one tire completely fall off the vehicle just as we drove out of the city on a highway! We were lucky to not have a major traffic accident. After slow to get the roadside assistance, we finally got a new tire installed 5 hours later and the entire day's travel plan was already ruined. Then I realized that the car tire shop did not check alignment/balance and car was very uncomfortable to drive over the rest of our trip. Oh, and the high beam and cruise control did not work on the car either, despite it has only 20k mileage.

Had a wonderful experience visiting Scotland until the moment we returned the car. The moment the Budget/Avis employee say, "you didn't get insurance from us," it was a red flag. No, "How are you", "morning", "how was the car?". Straight into scrutinizing every nook and crannies and finding things. He found an itty bitty nick (a milimeter or less) in a corner of the windshield where anyone can easily missed it and bubble on the tire. He seem to know what to look for. First, we returned the car the same condition we got it. Second, it was raining hard when we picked up the car though we inspected the car we were told to just check the body and that there was already an existing damage there. If we knew what we were in for we would have not rented from them or video every inch of the car.It was an obvious scam. He conveniently know what to look for like he already knew it existed. Charged us for a windshield and a tire. We disputed it, but he already made up his mind long before. He bullied us during the dispute. Called me a liar. Saying we returned the car unsafe. I replied that maybe it was Budget who rented us an unsafe car. Then when we were leaving another employee went up to us and verbally harassed us and telling us to learn how to drive and to get out and leave. This was such a shame to end a trip and leave a last impression. Beware, this place is a cheat and will scam you. I don't even know what's worst being cheated or harassed afterwards. We went to Budget/Avis because we have rented several times from them before (not in Scotland). Never again and I make sure I will tell friends and family to avoid this location and maybe even Budget in general.

BEWARE:- We hired a car for 3 days. We were unable to refuel the car due to traffic jams around the airport petrol station and the amount of time we had to get checked in etc. We had used a quarter of a tank. The car was checked in and then £95 was taken from my credit card with no explanation as to why. I have emailed their customer services twice. Both times i receive an automatic response saying my query is logged and that they may take 10 - 15 days to respond. I hear nothing. This company cannot be trusted with your credit card details as they just take what they fancy and then give you radio silence. I will come back to this review if this situation gets resolved
