The first three digits. This displays the width of the tyre in millimetres. A tyre marked 225 will measure 225mm across the tread from sidewall to sidewall.

The fourth and fifth digits of the tyre code that immediately follow the tyre width. The aspect ratio or profile height of the tyre sidewall is expressed as a percentage of the tyre width. So an aspect ratio of 55 for example means that the profile height of the tyre is 55% of its width.

The next two digits represent the size of the wheel rim that the tyre can be fitted to. It is also the diameter of the tyre from bead to bead.  So a tyre marked 16 will fit on a 16-inch wheel rim.

Speed Rating

The speed rating of a tyre is represented by a letter of the alphabet at the end of the tyre size code and indicates the maximum speed capability of the tyre. Tyres receive a speed rating based on a series of tests which measure the tyres capability to handle a set speed for a prolonged period of time.

Select your tyre speed rating to find out the maximum speed your tyres can maintain.

If you are unsure what speed rating you need, be sure to check your vehicle handbook. Choosing a lower speed rating than that recommended by your vehicle manufacturer could potentially invalidate your insurance.

Put car in to get front brake pads changed after warning light came on. Dropped keys off to the man who glanced at the car and said will most likely need backs changed as well. An hour later, I receive a call to say the all four wheels needed new pads and discs as was dangerous to drive. Quoted me £670. I straight away thought this couldn't be right as this was the cars first ever brake change (Front pads usually wear far faster than rear). I argued with the man to only fix the front (dubious as to if the discs actually needed changed). He refused on the grounds that it was kwik fit policy to change them all if it was in a dangerous condition. After a minute or so he went away to speak to his manager while I held the line. I was told 'on this occasion after reviewing the brakes again' that they would change only the front pads and discs as requested. This came to £370. I picked up the car later that day and while paying I asked about the state of the brake pads, the tone had shifted and they weren't 'that bad'. I was subsequently told they should have no issue passing it's MOT due in a couple months.... So from them being too dangerous to drive, to 'not that bad' and wouldn't even get a minor within my upcoming MOT... Won't be using again, make up faults to make more money and backtrack when caught out.

My car was making a rattling sound underneath and I thought it was a problem with my exhaust so I was dreading a large outlay. I called Kwik Fit and spoke to Derek who suggested I pop in and let him have a look. In no time he was back to let me know the heat shield had come loose and he had put on some new washers and tightened it up. No cost!! When does that ever happen?!! He really made my day and I won't hesitate to take my car back there the next time it needs anything done.
