Some of the children attending Lurgan Model Primary School and Nursery Unit will have special educational needs. These arise from the child’s physical incapacity or learning abilities. As it is the school’s intention to maximise each child’s potential, the school will try, within its resources, to meet these needs. This help may be provided in the child’s own classroom or children may be withdrawn in small groups for help in a particular subject.
If, despite this help, a child cannot cope in Lurgan Model Primary School and after the school has followed the Code of Practice a statement of the child’s needs will be issued by the Education Authority and these needs will be met by the Education Authority, either through extra assistance in the school, or with parent agreement, by placement in another appropriate school. The process of determining that a child has special educational needs in accordance with law is lengthy. It involves close co-operation between parents, teachers, school medical authorities and educational psychologists.
An education officer with responsibility for special needs will make the final decision about the appropriate form of education. The education officer will be pleased to provide information and guidance about the procedure to be followed after discussion of the child’s needs with the Principal.
