Based in the UK, Bill started Surpluswood by accident nearly twelve years ago when his trailer needed re-flooring.
Having built several businesses and a good reputation over the years from catering to energy utilities to property renovation he had retired ten years earlier.
He had been told that the offcuts of plywood that he bought at a car boot sale to refurbish the trailer cost £72 for an 2440mm x 1220mm (8’ x 4)’ sheet and checking this out with a timber merchant, found it to be true but was surprised when the merchant offered him a quantity of offcuts at a competitive price.
Seeing a business opportunity, and having a large enough premises to store them, he bought the lot! Weeks later the same merchant offered him some more and from there he is now offered offcuts from all over the country and sells them nationwide and even into Europe, mainly through Gumtree and eBay.
Gradually he filled his garage and then his shed until eventually he had to find a larger premises which is now jam-packed with all shapes and sizes of many types of offcuts of quality timber related boards including CHIPBOARD, OSB, MDF, LAMINATE AND PLYWOOD.
Based just outside Gloucester his customers come from as far apart as Deerham in Norfolk to Exeter in Devon, Newcastle On Tyne to Southampton and are as diverse as architects, builders, joiners, pattern makers, carpenters, furniture makers and DIY enthusiasts who make anything from Christmas tree ornaments to shed and barn building. Being passionate about recycling.
