The Indian Butler

Queen Victoria (Empress of India) had a longstanding interest in her Indian Territories and wished to employ some Indian servants for her Golden Jubilee here in England. So in 1887, she was gifted two Indian servants to join the Royal Household in Windsor, England.

One, in particular stood out, tall, handsome and charming. He quickly became the Queens favourite and rose through the ranks swiftly. She found him to be good and gentle, intelligent and a very refined gentleman. The Queen was fascinated by her new exotic help and had noted that she had great interest for both the people and the language. As they grew closer he opened up a world of colours and traditions which the Queen admired but could never personally visit as India was a journey too far so late in her age. The Empresses love grew to the extent he taught her to read and write in Urdu and Hindi and most importantly, he introduced the Empress to curries, so much so, curry was on the Royal menu every week.

During his Royal Service he was bestowed with many honours. He became her confidant, her teacher and “closest friend”.
