Cara, Nick and family would like to welcome you to The Old Black Horse

The Old Black Horse is a traditional country pub and kitchen located in Mapperley Village on the edge of Shipley Country Park. We serve food 6 days a week, including our famous ‘Carvery’ Sunday lunches. Our head chef, Tony, uses fresh ingrediants to create the delicious dishes on our menu, and his ever changing specials boards.

We are a ‘Free House’ which means we are completely independent and not tied to any brewery, allowing us to bring you a great selection of drinks from all over the world, including local real ales, specialist gins, and international wines.

Pop in and say hello, we can’t wait to meet you.

First time we have been there. We were recommended. We are now passing on the recommendation. Excellent HOT food. Put that in capitals as it was lovely and hot. Cooked to perfection. Lovely, friendly staff. Excellent value for money. Will be going again!!!!

Considering its location in Mapperley Village, it was really busy. Great outdoor area, too. It is a popular place for dog walkers and ramblers alike. I was pleasantly surprised as the exterior looked nothing special. I will be returning.

After reading the recent bad review and the brilliant response to it, my husband and I, decided to take a mid week trip to the Old black horse to try their main menu, having previously only visited on Sundays for carvery (which has always been enjoyed). It was very quiet upon our arrival, however we were greeted in a friendly, polite and informative manner. The restaurant area had lovely decor and the fairy lights gave it a lovely feel. My husband wanted the steak and ale pie, but was told that they didn’t have any of these as this was ordered in rather than homemade on site, which didn’t bother us. He went ahead and ordered the vegetarian pie. For starter, the fajita chicken wings were very tasty. The spices used were really nice. I had the creamy garlic chicken for main and the flavours were gorgeous, complemented with the fresh salad and gorgeous homemade chunky chips. A very satisfying dish at a very reasonable price. My husband enjoyed his pie and commented how nice it was to be accompanied by “proper mash” rather than sloppy Smash that a lot of other pub/restaurants tend to serve. We shall certainly be making more visits to this wonderful little country pub.

Fab local pub, great food and lovely staff! I'm honestly not sure where the people who have written bad reviews have eaten! We visit often and in the last two years the team have worked hard to offer a solution to lockdowns, outdoor service only and coping with full reopening. The food is great and amazingly well priced. I would recommend to anyone I know!

AVOID! Awful experience last 2 times! I went the second time giving them the benefit of the doubt but wish I never bothered, staff are rude, if your a fussy Eater then do not bother with the carvery I asked for an extra stuffing ball as I don’t eat veg and they wouldn’t let me, yet the veg would of been more value! The staff was then heard muttering and slagging me off at the bar (how professional) much nicer places local and better value for money!! We will not be returning and would never recommend.
