The Salthouse in Clevedon was originally used as a salt mine in the late 1800’s before it was changed to a Private Residence.

Set in a beautiful location within woodland surroundings and picturesque sea views, a lot has happened over the years and no doubt if the walls of this historic pub could talk they would be able to tell you a story or two.

Salt Panning was carried out on a 7 year lease by Samuel Gorges of Wraxall from 1689. He had permission from the Lord of the Manor to set up buildings, furnaces and retaining walls for the making of salt, which was done by letting sea water into depressions in what is now Salthouse Fields and letting evaporation take it’s course, the remaining moisture was boiled off in the furnaces.

Two cottages used by the salt workers were later converted into a fine private house by Mr Ferdinand Beeston, a timber merchant in the early 1830’s. He owned the house for some 20 years and when he became bankrupt, it was purchased by Conrad Finzel Junior, whose father built and owned what is now Clevedon Hall. The Finzels were sugar merchants and legend has it that they watched their ships come up the channel from the gazebo on Sugar Loaf Point, now derelict.

Good choice of beer and lagers and menu. We had the rolls and wraps, both of which we enjoyed. Sat out overlooking the pool and the sea. Can recommend. Car park payments are via mobile, 3hr slots, which is why I didn't give 5 stars.

Nice pub with stunning views of Clevedon Pier and the Bristol Channel. We often stop here on the way home from Cornwall. Disabled parking next to the pub. £3 for 3 hours but you get the money back on your first order. The door has a step, but they will put a ramp down if you ask. It's particularly nice if they have the burger bar open.

We visited Clevedon on Friday, the village has a residential feel to it, so don't expect too much going on. The pier was a bit boring, so we walked to the end of the seafront and found this pub. I don't normally like pubs but they have an indoor restaurant. The food was absolutely delicious, served quickly, the portions are filling, and the prices are good. If we ever go back to Clevedon we'll come here again.

Beautiful building, plenty of seating choices. Sat in bar area at a large table -- we all had great meals. I enjoyed my Mediterranean baguette, my daughter had killer loaded fries with Korean chicken, my son had fish and chips.....Friendly service. Only criticism is the peas were pretty drive and tasteless.
